Cheryl Beth Owen
Cheryl Beth Owen, 65, of Ava, passed away at 3:01 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2016, at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Murphysboro.
Cheryl was born on August 13, 1950, in Evansville, Indiana, to Charles Albert Owen and Virginia (Gates) Owen.
Growing up in Evansville, Indiana, she had participated in the Girl Scouts, the Evansville 4H Club, and Afghan Hound Society of Central Indiana. She was a Charm School Debutante. She was associated with the Shawnee National Trucking Company. She attended the University of Evansville and University of Southern Indiana, where she studied music art, art history, anthropology, and museology. She was a Student Government Senator, the Art Club President, and was on the Dean's List.
At SIU-Edwardsville, she was in the Phi Cappa Phi, Lambda Alpha, Anthropology Club, TRIBE – Native American Interest Group, she received the Kimmel Scholarship Award, and was on the Dean's List, and was in Who's Who in Colleges and Universities.
In Southern Illinois, she was member of the Prairie du Rocher Saddle Club and was an expert horse back rider, Mt. Carbon Church of God, and she participated in the French and Indian War Re-enactments.
She was a trusted friend and spouse, mother, animal and nature lover, researcher, lecturer and educator of cultures and antiquities; award winning artist, known for her renderings of animals; and musician--known for trumpeting and songs of the Native American Flute.
She married Douglas Kemp on June 30, 1990, in New Harmony, Indiana, and he survives.
Other survivors include one daughter Lauren Elizabeth Owen of Chicago;
two brothers Brian Owen and Dwight Owen, both of Evansville, IN;
and one half sister Marsha Swain of Evansville, IN.
She was preceded in death by one half brother Ron Shippe and her parents.
Her body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2016, at Mt. Carbon Church of God, where family and friends may visit from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the church.
