Joe Burkey, 93, went to be with his Lord and Savior at 5:35 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, 2018, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Joe was born in Jackson County, Illinois, near the Poplar Ridge area, to John Lester Burkey and Ada (Leone) Leach) Burkey.

He was saved at the Poplar Ridge Methodist Church at age eleven and served the Lord ever since. He loved the Lord with all of his heart. His and his wife's greatest joy were raising their family and working for the Lord. He loved woodworking.

He had served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines during World War II.

Mr. Burkey owned Jackson County Tractor in Murphysboro, and also worked as a general contractor until he turned the business over to his son.

He was a member of the Mt. Carbon Christian Church in Murphysboro.

Joe married his wife Beatrice "Bea" (Wyatt) on February 15, 1947, in Vergennes, Illinois, and she survives.

Other survivors include four children Frances (John) Burkey Lindeman, Joseph L. (Jan) Burkey, Sam (Sara) Burkey, and Julie (Scott) Bridges, all of Murphysboro;

twelve grandchildren Jennifer Edwards, John (Jana) Lindeman, Jared Lindeman, Vicky Lindeman, Ryan (Marci) Burkey, Jason (Ellie) Burkey, Christy (Charlie) Etherton, Bradley Burkey, A. J. (Ashley) Burkey, Ashlee Burkey, Candice Kennedy, and Leslie (Clay) Fuson;

and eighteen great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one grandson Tommy Joe Burkey, two brothers Wayne and Paul Burkey, one sister Ruth Haury, and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 28, 2018, at Elm Street Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Allen and Rev. Gary Darnell officiating, with burial at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park, with military services conducted by the Paul Stout American Legion Post # 127 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials may be made to Campus Outreach for Clay and Leslie Fuson, P.O.
