Michael Lee Singleton, Sr., 68, of Murphysboro, passed away at 11:47 a.m. Sunday, February 4, 2018, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Michael was born on May 4, 1949, in Detroit, Michigan, to Calvert Lee Singleton and Lola Mae (Hawkins) Nardi.

He started working as a trash man and then went to work for the Laborer’s Union. He was working at the power plant in 1988, when he became disabled.

Mr. Singleton was a very active member of Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro, where he helped with the food pantry. He was also very involved with the Jackson County Democrats. For many years, Mike was a leader in Boy Scouts and had been a former commissioner with the Greater St. Louis Area Boy Scouts for several years. He was collector of many things, including hats and knives. He was an avid fisherman, which included commercial fishing, and hunter. He enjoyed being Santa Claus for over forty years in the Murphysboro area.

He married Ramona Molesky on July 4, 1980, in Murphysboro and she preceded him in death on February 21, 2017.

Mike is survived by four children Elizabeth Ann Ramirez of Omaha, NE, Shellie Lee Scholz and her husband Leonard LeRoy Scholz of Gorham, Lynn Marie Singleton and Michael Lee Singleton, Jr., both of Murphysboro;

fourteen grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren and one on the way;

three brothers Jimmy Singleton of Murphysboro, Elmer Singleton and Joe Singleton, both of Marion;

and three sisters Cindy Schuller of Fort Myers, FL, Beth Canning of Murphysboro, and Judy Tippy of Vienna.

He was preceded in death by four grandchildren, two brothers, five sisters, and his parents.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 9, 2018, at Elm Street Baptist Church in Murphysboro with Rev. Charles Allen officiating, and burial at St. Andrew Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the family. For more information, please visit www.pettettfuneralhome.com.
