Elizabeth "Betty" Ellen Heape (McNeill)
Elizabeth Ellen "Betty" Heape, 90, of Murphysboro, passed away at 2:15 a.m. Thursday, February 1, 2018, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
Elizabeth was born September 19, 1927, in Murphysboro, to Homer McNeill and Mary Jane (Wieland) McNeill.
Betty worked as the office manager for Golden Rule Insurance in Murphysboro. She had a thirty year career with the Illinois State Health Department. She worked in the Carbondale office as a receptionist and clerk typist I. When the office was moved to Marion, she worked as a clerk typist II, and retired in 1988. Elizabeth also worked on the beef cattle farm, that she and her husband owned until 1999, when they sold most of it. She enjoyed working in the garden, traveling, and fishing. In her later years, she like doing crossword puzzles, and eating out, as well as visiting with her family, taking care of and playing with her cats, and feeding birds and wildlife.
Mrs. Heape was a member of the United Methodist Church in Murphysboro. She was a member of the American Legion Post # 127 Ladies Auxiliary and the V.F.W. Post # 7190 Ladies Auxiliary, both in Murphysboro.
Elizabeth married Homer T. Heape in Murphysboro, and he preceded her in death on March 4, 2009.
Survivors include her one son and daughter in law Dennis and Linda Heape of Murphysboro;
one grandson and his wife Joshua and Melissa Heape and their daughters--two great granddaughters--Madison and Emily Heape, all of Phoenix, AZ.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her twin brother William McNeill, one other brother Robert McNeill, and one sister Margaret Ann Ahner.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 7, 2018, at Pettett Funeral Home with Rev. Larry Gilbert officiating and burial at Tower Grove Cemetery.
