Michael E.  Althoff PhD
Michael E. Althoff, Ph.D. 70, of Carbondale, passed away at 5:13 a.m. Sunday, September 17, 2017, at his residence in Carbondale.

Michael was born on November 23, 1946, in Murphysboro, to Edward Althoff and Pauline (Kraft) Althoff.

He was a graduate from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, where he received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. in Psychology. He was a proud Saluki. Upon graduating in 1973, his private practice in both Clinical and Forensic Psychology continued in Carbondale and in other cities and states. He specialized in forensic mental health evaluations, both criminal and civil. He consulted with many agencies and service groups in the area, and wrote many publications and professional papers in his field. He loved his work and especially thrived on helping people.

Dr. Althoff was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro, and a member of both the American and Illinois Psychological Associations.

Mike married Janet (Crain) Green on November 15, 1990, in Murphysboro, and she survives. Other survivors include two step children Derek L Green of Winter Haven, FL and Heather Green-Hall and her husband Randall Hall of Marion;

two grandchildren Mollie Hester-Kelly and Noah A.J. Hall;

his mother Pauline Althoff of Murphysboro; one sister Cindy Stoll of Murphysboro; one brother Robert Charles Althoff of Park Hill, OK;

two nephews and one niece, Jeremy Edward Stoll and Derick Hardy, Kimberly Stoll-French and her husband Nick French, and Joshua Stoll.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Mike adored his wife, Janet, and was very devoted to his family. He loved his step children, grandkids, niece, and nephews. He especially loved his dog, Phinneas. He enjoyed going fishing with his friends and he loved to laugh.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Josemon Hoem officiating with burial at Pleasant Grove Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 10 to 12 noon on Thursday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials to Hospice of Southern Illinois, Inc.
